A new library is coming to the heart of downtown New Canaan, one which reflects the rich tapestry of our community and draws inspiration from some of the most distinct and celebrated libraries in the world.

why now?

It’s no secret that the current Library building is in failing condition and can no longer meet the needs of the community. The youngest part of this building is over 40 years old. Although the building’s size has not changed since its last renovation back in 1979, every aspect of the Library’s services have evolved and significantly outgrown the existing space.

Libraries in our peer communities — Darien, Westport, Wilton, Greenwich and Ridgefield — have all built new or substantially renovated libraries. Today, as we look ahead to the next century, our path continues to be illuminated by the desire to have a future focused library that will endure for generations to come.

We’ve worked for over 10 years, in close partnership with our community to design a transformational space that exemplifies a modern library and creates endless opportunities for kids and adults to gather, learn, and grow.

Design Inspiration

The new 42,000+ square foot Library building is inspired by the mid-century modern design movement which has deep roots right here in New Canaan. That influence can be felt in many ways including how the design links the built environment to its natural surroundings. Indoor and outdoor spaces will now integrate to create new programming and experiential possibilities. Each design element carefully considers the individual needs of the people it serves.
